On November 3, 2017 Activison released the long awaited first person shooter, Call of Duty: WWII. The game, which was developed by American game developers Sledgehammer Games takes a different approach to the usual first person shooter in many ways and goes back to the essential roots of the beloved game series.
Call of Duty had a tough time in the last few years. With its last major title release: Infinity Warfare taking a backlash from the gaming community for being extensively futuristic. The game was also criticized for taking a different direction than the usual “boots to the ground”gameplay style that the game is known for across the globe.
Call of Duty: WWII tries to negate the disapproval of the previous games in the series by ensuring that it returns to its roots. WWII is the first Call of Duty title to be set during the World War 2 timeline since 2008’s World at War.
Story and Gameplay
The campaign mode of the game follows Private Red Daniels who along with his squad goes through various principal and key events in the Second World War such as the Battle of the Bulge, The storming of the beach of Omaha among various others. The game follows a largely story driven narrative with numerous cut scenes that provide a sense of connection between the game and it’s story.
The gameplay has changed quite a bit when compared to previous Call of Duty titles. There are no fancy manoeuvres like wall running and double jumping to be done. Unlimited sprinting is also absent.
The game follows a largely basic combat system but with a few key differences. The most prominent of these differences is that the game does not feature regeneration of health overtime. The player must rely on their squad mates for health packs. These health packs are also scattered across the ground.
Multiplayer and Nazi Zombies modes
WWII features two additional modes alongside its story mode. The first and more important of these is the Multiplayer mode.
The multiplayer mode randomly assigns players to either the Allies or the Axis side. The game further gives players the options to choose among various nationalities within the side that they have been assigned to. The multiplayer mode features divisions, a class system in which a player may select one of 5 classes. Each class or division has unique abilities and preferred weapons.
Another essential aspect of Multiplayer mode within the game is the “Headquarters”. The headquarters can hold up to 48 players at a time and is located on the Omaha Beach. The headquarters have a shooting range where players can practice and engage in one vs one fights.
The second mode in the game is called Nazi Zombies and the story in this mode takes place in an alternate history environment. This mode follows the third Reich as they try to create an army of zombies in order to turn the war in their favor during its final stages.
The gameplay style follows a wave system where a player must complete objectives while going through waves of nazi zombies. The mode is considerably larger than the previous zombie modes of other Call of Duty games.
