Following the scrapping of the sequel to 2008’s Prey and the passing of the game’s intellectual property rights to Bethesda, the development of the new game was transferred to Arkane Studios and the decision of the publishers and developers to reboot the entire franchise altogether, led to the birth of Prey.
Prey is a first person shooter role playing game set in an open world environment. The game takes place on a space research lab called the Talos I, and follows Morgan Yu, who must fend off and defeat an alien species called the Typhon. The game follows a highly detailed story in an alternative version of our own history in which John F. Kennedy survived his assassination attempt and put all his efforts into ensuring that the United States surpasses the Soviet Union in the race to reach Space.
However when an alien race is discovered on the Sputnik I, USA and the Soviet Union work together to defeat and contain the aliens into Kletka, a space station built exclusively as a prison for the speices. Kletka is later renamed to Talos I and is the primary location where most of the game takes place. However some instances in the game do occur in zero gravity, outside the space station.
The game follows a stealth based gameplay style with players being able to hide and utilize the environment around them in order to defeat the Typhon. The playable map of the space station is restricted in the beginning and areas start to unlock as the player advances through the game.
The game also follows a more linear approach to the player’s navigation in such a manner that the player will return to already discovered places more than once. Prey also features a skill tree with the skills becoming more powerful and more expensive to upgrade as the game goes on. The ending of the game will also depend on the players decisions throughout the playing duration which is about 40-45 hours.
