Once every year, Blizzard Entertainment, who are responsible for massive titles like Warcraft, StarCraft, Heroes of the Storm, Diablo and Overwatch, hold a convention for the promotion of all their major franchises. This convention is called BlizzCon and it has been held in the Anaheim Convention Centre in Anaheim, California since October 2005.
BlizzCon usually features numerous announcements related to all their titles, upcoming previews and demos of games, interactive sessions such as Q&A and panels. The convention also features a huge music act at closing night. In the past there have been concerts by The Offspring, Tenacious D, Foo Fighters, Ozzy Osbourne, Blink-182, Metallica, Linkin Park, and “Weird Al” Yankovic. This year the event will be headlined by Muse.
This year, Overwatch is expected to be the biggest draw since it has been the most successful title amongst the huge roster that is looked over by Blizzard Entertainment. Like last year’s Sombra, players can expect a new hero to be launched in the game. And with the convention taking place right after the Halloween event, this may turn out to be a perfect opportunity for Blizzard to showcase something new and exciting. At the time of writing, both physical and virtual ticket holders have access to a new and exclusive Winston skin in game.
World of Warcraft has also seen a series of videos of being released in the run up to BlizzCon 2017 and the lates expansion, entitled Legion, is slowly wrapping up updates meaning that some form of an announcement is due.
World of Warcraft game director Ian Hazzikostas had this to say:-
“We are so excited, hard at work getting ready for BlizzCon and really can’t wait to share everything that we’ve been working on. I know players are wondering what’s coming next, where can we possibly go after this climactic battle that awaits us and can’t wait to tell everybody more about it at BlizzCon.”
Diablo will be seeing no new announcements at BlizzCon this year as confirmed by Blizzard Entertainment in a forum post.
‘This year, we want to give you a heads-up that while Diablo will be on the show floor, we won’t be making any new Diablo announcements. There will be a time for that at some point in the future, but that time is not now.”
Blizzcon 2017 will also see numerous tournaments being held which will see professional teams from all over the globe and across various Blizzard titles.
The list of planned tournaments is as follows:-
- World of Warcraft Arena World Championship
- Heroes of the Storm HGC Finals
- Overwatch World Cup 2017
- Hearthstone Invitational
- Starcraft World Championship Series Global Finals
